Bricknell Primary School pupil Matilda Gilroy (6) entered a competition in the summer which was organised by “Fab lollies” to design a den.
She created her design based on a rainforest with tropical plants, trees, snakes/animals, birds etc and although it took her a long time to do, it was a labour of love and it was all her own work.
She got the idea of creating a rainforest den because they had been covering this subject at school and Mrs Jones went to her classroom to show the children items which she had brought back from her visit to the rainforest in Ecuador. She was fascinated by it all and talked non stop about the trees being chopped down and the animals losing their homes.
The competition was aimed at benefiting the local community and she had to nominate a community centre, so she nominated the new Children’s Centre presently being built at Bricknell Primary School, due to be opened in January 2011.
The competition had 5,000 applicants and she is 1 of 10 finalists, so she has done really well and we are very proud of her.
She has so far won a flip camcorder and will receive a “Fab” branded tent and £1,000 for the Children’s Centre as a runner up, however, if she goes on to win, she will win the den of her design and this will be built at the Children’s Centre up to the value of £15,000!!! The winner will be the finalist who receives the most votes. Voting begins Monday 4th October until 31st October.
Please vote for her and tell all of your friends, families and work colleagues to vote for her too, it would be brilliant not just for the local community to benefit from winning but also for children from the school who will also use the centre.
