Allotment News
The Gardening Club have been busy again with June and July been the busiest months so far. They were feeling the pressure from the beginning of the growing season because of the Driffield Show. However, with a lot of hard work and positive thinking they managed to win their first Highly Commended certificate! Well done to all the allotmenteers who managed to stay calm and are hoping for even better things next year! Read more to find out what else has been happening on the allotment.
After the produce had been harvested Hull in Bloom came for a visit. Mrs Allison had arranged the visit some time before but then became a little worried that there wasn't much left in the ground to show. However, Ben (the official allotment photographer!) had been taking pictures each week so these were shown to the judges along with the basket of produce from the Driffield Show. This, coupled with a bit of charm, won them four certificates and two medals. Well done!
Along with all the triumphs, there has been some disappointments - the cauliflowers bolted, sprouts were eaten by caterpillars and to top it all the largest pumpkin has rotted from beneath! Never mind, there are still three small pumpkins and lessons have been learnt for next year.
Now they have the wonderful greenhouse, they also have lots of tomatoes and so had a try at making Tomato Chutney. Perhaps Parents Evening wasn't the best day to try this as the strong vinegar smell lingered well into the evening! Sorry about that!
Things to do now on the allotment:
- Dig over empty beds and sow manures
- Plant flowering bulbs for spring
- Sow wintering onions and spring cabbages
- Clean greenhouse, shed and tools
