Allotment News
This month has been very busy so far for the children in the gardening club. Over the last few weeks they have been getting the soil ready for sowing seeds. Read more to find out what they have planted and how the crops are coming along.
We have planted the potatoes, three rows of Pentlan Javlin which are a first early variety and are suitable for leaving a little later if required. However we have had orders or requests for these already so lets hope for a huge crop. A huge thank you to Callum, Kai and Josh for the energy they have put in getting the potatoes in. The onion sets are doing well both red and white varieties, as are the cabbages that we have now moved out of the greenhouse and into the second largest bed.
The rhubarb has really taken off this spring. We were all concerned last year as the crowns had been split so they didn't produce many sticks, here's hoping for a bumper crop.
Our new raspberry canes are in and budding up nicely. Thank you Megan Ann's dad for those. Jamie has decided to grow his own herbs this season and already has Rosemary, Mint and Thyme which I'm sure cookery club will be visiting for fresh supplies.
The strawberry bed has now been refreshed and we may have the chance to offer them for sale later in the year. Don't hold your breath though as last year's never got passed the outdoor tap. But ooh they were sweet and juicy!
As for the seed sowing: one full packet of Purple Sprouting Broccoli, half a packet of Sprouts, one packet of Purple Sage, and maybe 1000 Leeks! We haven't quite mastered quantity yet but we are getting there!
